Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Wednesday suggested she would serve her last term as Speaker of the House after securing her caucus’ nomination to lead the lower chamber.
Pelosi in 2018 made an agreement with Democratic rebels to only serve four more years in power. She was asked about that pact during her press conference Wednesday.
“I don’t want to undermine any leverage I may have, but I made the statement,” she said according to Fox News.
“When that conversation took place, there was a move to put limits on the leadership and the chairs of committees. ... They said they were going to do it. They didn’t do it. Whether it passes or not, I will abide by those limits that are there.”
When asked whether that was a “Shermanesque statement,” Pelosi responded: "No, it's not. It's a statement that I made. Listen, if my husband is listening, don't let me have to be more specific than that. because we never expected to have another term now.”
“I consider this a gift and I can’t wait to work with Joe Biden,” she continued. “I don’t want to undermine any leverage I have but I made that statement.”
Pelosi, 80, won the support of her detractors in 2018 when she agreed to the term limit.
