Like a man straddling a wobbly fence, House Speaker Paul Ryan is trying to keep a steady balance when it comes to Donald Trump.
And as
The Hill reports, it's not easy, because though the Wisconsin Republican has endorsed Trump after hesitating for weeks, he also has to blast him when the billionaire real estate tycoon turns to offensive rhetoric.
"Paul is in a very tough spot. ... On the one hand, though it took some time, Paul's reconciled himself to the inevitable reality that Trump is the Republican nominee," GOP strategist Ana Navarro told The Hill.
"On the other hand, Paul — a Jack Kemp Republican who has spent his entire life trying to make the GOP more inclusive — feels a need to denounce the stupid venom Trump spews. It's a tricky tightrope to maneuver."
Ryan was in a particularly tough spot when Trump called into doubt whether U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel could fairly oversee a lawsuit involving Trump University because the Indiana-born judge is "a Mexican."
Trump was referring to the controversy over his plan to make Mexico pay for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.
