A former White House staffer to President Barack Obama is running for Congress to replace Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif.

Alejandra Campoverdi told the Los Angeles Times her upbringing and experience in D.C. gives her the background needed to take over for Becerra, who will become California's attorney general. She worked in the White House from 2009-2012 and served as an assistant to a deputy chief of staff and later as deputy director of Hispanic media, the newspaper notes.

"I have a personal connection to the struggles of the people in this district, and I know how Washington works," Campoverdi said.

"I was raised by a single mother who emigrated from Mexico and by my grandmother. Every day I saw the sacrifices they made for our family and for the community.

The Hill reports she is already vowing to "stand up against Donald Trump and his politics of hate."

In a YouTube video, Campoverdi added: "I want to stand here and tell you that the reason why I'm taking on this challenge is that your family is like my family, and our families deserve a champion."
