Big liberal donors came out in force eight years ago, shelling out $200 million in their unsuccessful effort to force President George W. Bush out of the White House. But they’re more hesitant to open their wallets this time around, even as Republican super PACs dominate the campaign’s financial landscape,
Politico reports.
The Democracy Alliance, an obscure group comprised of top donors, may determine whether President Barack Obama is armed with a financial bazooka or just a pop gun. Many members are upset with the group’s decision to back Obama and the super PACs supporting him and other Democrats.
Originally the group was founded to finance liberal think tanks and policy projects, and some members are upset with its shift in emphasis. So some Democracy Alliance donors, including billionaire founding member Peter Lewis, are considering bolting from the group.
Only a few members of Democracy Alliance have donated to the Democratic super PACs, and some may not fork over anything for Obama at all.
“We really haven’t corralled donors to do major independent expenditures for two or three cycles, so there is a sales cycle, and you don’t always close the sale immediately,” Rob McKay, chairman of the Democracy Alliance and a board member of the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action, told Politico.
