The New York Daily News is not toning down its vicious front-page attacks on Donald Trump now that the billionaire real-estate tycoon is the nation's president-elect — hitting him on Wednesday with the insulting new title of "Mister Softie."
The cartoonish Page One headline is accompanied by a doctored photo of Trump with a swirl of orange soft-serve ice cream atop his head and the words:
The scrappy tabloid's charge refers to Trump's grilling by The New York Times in which he backed down on his campaign promise to throw "Crooked Hillary" Clinton in jail and waffled somewhat on his opposition to climate change and approval of torture for terror suspects.
For more than a year, the Daily News — which backed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton — was relentless in its hatred of Trump's quest to be the nation's 45th president, referring to him as the "Anti-Christ," portraying him in altered photos as a maniacal circus clown and labeling him a "fake philanthropist."
The paper's outlandish missives at Trump, which made headlines around the world, were supervised by former editor-in chief Jim Rich, who resigned his post three weeks before Election Day.
Any hint that the paper would modify its approach to Trump under veteran Daily News staffer Arthur Browne, whom newspaper owner Mort Zuckerman tapped as Rich's successor, has now been put to rest.
