Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday the United States is ready to talk with Iran with no pre-conditions — except one from President Donald Trump: that Tehran “give up the nuclear weapons.”
In an interview on CNN’s "State of the Union," Pence said “Iran needs to understand we’ll never allow them to obtain a nuclear weapon, and we will not allow them to continue to sow violence across the region.”
“I think the president has made it clear he's more than prepared to have discussions with no pre-conditions with the Iranians,” he said. “But the one pre-condition is that they need to give up the nuclear weapons.”
Pence also dismissed criticism of a last-minute decision by Trump to call off a strike on Iran, saying he was getting data “throughout” the discussions about retaliation for the Iranians shooting down a U.S. drone.
“As the president indicated late in the process, there were more specific projections given to him relative to the targets that he was prepared to use force against and he concluded it was not a proportionate response to shooting down an unmanned American aircraft,” he said.
