In the end, the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller's report did not matter, because public perception had already been formed and it changed very few minds, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

"The public has reached a hung jury: Not innocent, not guilty, no consensus," Democratic pollster Peter Hart said.

The poll revealed 80% of Americans heard the news from the partially redacted Mueller report but just 30% say it had cleared the president, while 42% said it did not exonerate him, and 29 percent remained unsure.

Other key findings in the poll:

  • 60% said President Trump has not been truthful about Russian election meddling.
  • 51% approves of Trump's economic performance, while 41% disapprove.
  • Just 17% say evidence exists for impeachment proceedings, but another 32% want Congress to keep investigating to potentially impeach the president.

NBC News and The Wall Street Journal polled 900 adults April 28-May 1 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.27 percentage points.
