Preaching for a convincing Democrat victory over President Donald Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is advising against impeachment, while warning a narrow victory might lead the president to refuse to leave the White House, The New York Times reported.

"We have to inoculate against that, we have to be prepared for that," Pelosi told the Times, calling for a convincing victory over the president in the 2020 election and not by impeachment beforehand.

Speaker Pelosi fears President Trump, as she feared in 2018, "is not going to respect the election," according to the report.

"If we win by four seats, by a thousand votes each, he's not going to respect the election," Pelosi recalling of her thinking, per the Times.

"He would poison the public mind. He would challenge each of the races; he would say 'you can't seat these people.' We had to win. Imagine if we hadn't won — oh, don't even imagine. So, as we go forward, we have to have the same approach."

Pelosi added a warning against the Democratic Party turning to far left to combat the president.

"Own the center left, own the mainstream," Pelosi told the Times. "Our passions were for healthcare, bigger paychecks, cleaner government — a simple message.

"We did not engage in some of the other exuberances that exist in our party."
