In a dramatic shift, Democracy Alliance, a liberal mega-donor group, will pour $100 million in Democratic funding into swing states in lieu of Washington, D.C. groups, according to its new three-year spending plan, Politico reported.
The plan is aimed at beating President Donald Trump in 2020 where he had swung the past election, including social media campaigns and the next round of redistricting, according to the report.
"It's not that we don't need any more national organizations, or that the national organizations are sufficiently resourced – of course they need investments," Democracy Alliance President Gara LaMarche told donors at a recent members meeting in Texas, per Politico. "We have to be working at the state level and we have to be funding organizations in the grassroots."
Democracy Alliance helps fund the Center for American Progress and Media Matters, left-leaning Washington-based groups, but now donors can pledge at least $200,000 to groups on a list of organizations, according to the report.
The three-year plan, obtained by Politico, focuses on "funding programs that listen to voters' concerns and amplify the policy records — and harm — that the Trump administration and conservatives have caused in Americans' lives."
"We view our job, generally, as helping to build the infrastructure that is in place for an eventual nominee, but we're not doing our job well if we don’t have our eye on the long term," LaMarche said, per the report.
The group also priorities initiatives to mobilize voters, including $12 million toward Native American communities, according to Politico.
