Donald Trump received praise in a North Korea state newspaper editorial calling the likely Republican presidential candidate a "wise politician," according to
NK News Now.
Writer Han Yang Mook said, "In my personal opinion, there are many positive aspects to Trump's 'inflammatory policies,'" according to the report.
The article was published in NPRK Today, a state-run media outlet. The editorial approved Trump's claim that he would not get involved in conflicts between North and South Korea. Yang Mook said, "Isn't this fortunate from North Koreans' perspectives?"
According to
The New York Times, in March, Trump said that under his leadership, the U.S. would exit South Korea if it didn't pay for protection. The editorial writer welcomed that possibility.
"Yes, do it now," Yang Mook wrote. He then credited Trump for offering direct talks with North Korea, and encouraged U.S. voters to vote for him saying, "The president that U.S. voters must vote for is not that dull Hillary."
Aidan Foster-Carter of the University of Leeds slammed the editorial, saying in the NK News report that it was a reminder about the possible danger of Trump's policies. Foster-Carter said, "This is a timely reminder — if it were needed — of just how completely Trump plans to tear up established U.S. policy in the region; and what an irresponsible, unthinking menace the man is."
While the North Korea paper praised Trump, the candidate presented a different tone in February. Trump appeared on
CBS News and said that he would support assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "I've heard of worse things, frankly. I mean this guy's a bad dude."
