Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that "the whole thing just stinks" after Attorney General Loretta Lynch repeatedly refused to answer questions before a congressional committee on the Hillary Clinton email scandal or her meeting on the tarmac last month with former President Bill Clinton.
"When you look at that, no wonder the American people think Washington is corrupt and Washington is sick — and no wonder they think the fix is in," Gingrich, who is being considered for a No. 2 slot by Donald Trump, told Sandra Smith on
Fox News. "This is a very, very alarming situation.
"I don't see how you can have an attorney general who refuses 74 times to answer questions in front of a congressional committee," he said.
At a hearing lasting more than four hours before the House Judiciary Committee, Lynch reportedly refused to answer questions 74 times on her decision to close the email probe without charges against Clinton or her aides and the June 27 meeting at a Phoenix airport.
"The very appearance of the attorney general of the United States meeting with somebody who is under investigation — and think about the sequencing," Gingrich said.
"His wife gets interrogated on a Saturday morning at her home for about 3 and a half hours. Sunday is a day off. Monday is a federal holiday.
"And by Tuesday, the FBI has absorbed 3 1/2 hours of testimony and [Director James] Comey holds a press conference which, for 14 minutes, he explains why she should be indicted and for two minutes explains why he's not going to.
"This is why the people of America believe the city of Washington is corrupt and why the system has to be dramatically changed."
