Organizers behind the effort to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom say they have 1.95 million signatures, enough to trigger a special recall election, ahead of a March 17 deadline, reports Fox News.

“That is more than enough to be able to have this initiative qualified for a special election later this year to let the people finally decide … what is gonna happen with the fate and the future of California Gov. Gavin Newsom,” Randy Economy, a political adviser working on the effort, said at a press conference Sunday.

“Californians are consistently becoming more disgruntled with how their state’s run,” he added.

County and state elections officials still need to verify that 1.5 million are valid signatures from registered California voters before the recall can qualify for the ballot.

Petition supporters have until March 17 to collect 1,495,709 valid signatures.

Interest in recalling Newsom is high after reports surfaced that he had dined with friends at an expensive restaurant in January while he was telling California residents to stay at home because of the coronavirus pandemic.
