One of California Gov. Gavin Newsom's children has been quarantined for 14 days after a classmate at the private school he attends in Sacramento tested positive for COVID-19, the governor's office has confirmed.

The school and child have not been identified for privacy reasons, reports Politico. Newsom communications director Nathan Click confirmed the quarantine.

"The family has taken the potential exposure seriously and is following all state protocols," Click said. “After being alerted by the school that a classmate tested positive for COVID-19, the potentially exposed Newsom child began a 14-day quarantine from the date of exposure in accordance with state public health guidance for schools."

Newsom received a rapid test this week that was negative and will get a nasal swab test this weekend, according to Click. All four of Newsom's children, ages 4-11, and his wife have tested negative.

“The Newsom child was tested twice [5 days and 7 days past their last contact with the COVID-19 positive student]," Click said. "In addition, each of the Newsom children was also tested on Day 5.”

According to state health guidelines, only the person directly exposed to an infected person must be quarantined, not others in the family.

Newsom said late last month that his children had gone back to classes at their Sacramento private school, which expanded its phased-in approach to five days a week this month.

The news comes amid complaints because most of the state's 6 million students in public schools are still doing distance learning.

The school the Newsom children attend plans to move to remote learning after the Thanksgiving break and through the second week of December. After that, children must obtain a negative COVID-19 test to return to classes.
