Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., leads the polling for the New Hampshire primary, but all four of the top Democratic primary candidates top President Donald Trump in a hypothetical general election, according to the initial NBC News/Marist poll.
"President Trump is pretty much getting only his approval rating in head-to-head matchups against the top-tier Democrats," Marist College Institute for Public Opinion Director Lee Miringoff said.
Results among likely New Hampshire Democratic primary voters:
- Sanders 22%.
- Pete Buttigieg 17%.
- Joe Biden 15%.
- Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., 13%.
- Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., 10%.
- Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, 6%.
- Andrew Yang 5%.
The New Hampshire primary is Feb. 11, eight days after the Feb. 3 Iowa caucuses.
"Sanders' advantage is bolstered by his strong support among progressive Democrats and younger voters," pollster Miringoff said.
"His supporters are also far more enthusiastic about his candidacy than backers of his closest rivals."
And in the four hypothetical matchups against Trump:
- Buttigieg tops Trump by 10 percentage points (51-41%)
- Sanders and Biden top Trump by 8 (51-43%)
- Warren tops Trump by 4 (48-44%).
The poll was conducted Jan. 20-23 among 2,223 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points, and the 697 likely Democratic voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
