Less than a month into the new year, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-N.M., and her Democratic Party allies in the New Mexico General Assembly are off to a fast start impeding our constitutional rights. Their main target this year: the Second Amendment.

Under Lujan Grisham’s leadership, there will be more than 20 anti-gun bills, including a radical bill making all firearms illegal unless they are entered into a gun registry or are modified with bolted-in magazines under ten rounds.

Other extreme bills include a 14-business-day waiting period with a gun database that can be reviewed by law enforcement, upping the age to twenty-one to purchase or possess any firearm, and allowing gun manufacturers and stores to be held personally liable for the actions of others.

New Mexico Democrats are not shying away from their desire to abolish the Second Amendment and take your guns.

Meanwhile, common sense legislation that protects New Mexicans without restricting our rights will most likely be tabled by Democrats or not even brought forward for debate.

A bill I drafted this year would incentivize gun owners to buy gun safes to keep firearms out of the reach of children.

This incentive would have given gun owners a $1000 tax credit on their safe purchase, making it easier and more affordable to keep our kids safe.

Instead of these common sense approaches that do not violate our constitutional rights, New Mexico Democrats are setting an example for Democrats nationally to follow.

Last year, our governor attempted to violate the rights of legal gun owners by abusing her authority and using an emergency health order to ban guns in Albuquerque.

When questioned about her overreach of power, Governor Lujan Grisham said, "No constitutional right, in my view, including my oath, is intended to be absolute."

All elected officials swear an oath to defend the Constitution of New Mexico and the United States. Yet this governor has repeatedly shown us that her vow to the people means nothing.

She was elected to govern, not dictate.

New Mexicans deserve to have representatives who stand up for our constitution, not against it.

We must protect our rights from the overbearing arm of this governor.
