Following the sudden resignation of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman earlier this month, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal has vowed to make sure the legal fight against the Trump administration on a range of issues continues unabated, Politico reported on Wednesday.
"If with him not being there, there's a gap, we'll fill that gap to make sure there's no backsliding," said Grewal, who is the highest-ranking Sikh in the history of American government.
Schneiderman had been a national leader in the group of Democratic attorneys general who have banded together since last year to take on the administration on everything from immigration to the environment.
However, New Jersey, run by a Republican governor, was mostly on the sidelines until Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy won the election and took office this past January, NJ.com reported.
Grewal joined the same group after also assuming office in January and has played catch-up by joining or starting 30 legal actions against the federal government
Grewal has also tried to take up the slack of another aspect of what Schneiderman had been doing to battle Trump by talking with special counsel Robert Mueller's team about de-conflicting investigations that the New York office could pursue, since much of the president's business and campaign had been based at Trump Tower in New York, Politico reported.
Although Grewal's jurisdiction does not include as much of president's empire, Trump has spent many key moments during the transition and most weekends last spring and summer at his Bedminster residence in New Jersey during the period in which he plotted to fire FBI Director James Comey.
"Much like Attorney General Schneiderman, we have more contact with properties in New Jersey, and if there's any indication of any criminal activity, or anything like that, we'll use the powers at our disposal to investigate," Grewal said.
However, he did not reveal if he has been in touch with Mueller's team on the subject.
Murphy said he has given Grewal a mandate to take on the Trump administration wherever it is sensible and possible.
