When President Donald Trump likely gets booted from office in 2020, only the "Never Trumpers" who refused to back him during the election, "can credibly claim to stand against the moral abominations that suffused Trump's political rise and the first year of his presidency," the Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf writes.
Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel in a recent column said Trump "kept his eye on the prize" on the way to a "historically successful first year in office." Newt Gingrich cited the president's national security strategy and tax reform legislation as big achievements that could have failed without "the right leadership, focus and determination."
"Analysts, historians and scholars will look back on this week as the moment the Trump administration became truly historic. Both of this week's historic achievements reflected candidate Trump's campaign pledges," Gingrich wrote in a Fox column.
But Friedersdorf called Trump a bigot who stoked racial and ethnic divisions for power. And, Trump this year, he said, "presided over many policy failures."
"Any president could pass a tax bill or confirm federal judges given a Senate and House that is controlled by their party. And Trump's tax bill failed to simplify the system while his federal court appointments include embarrassingly unqualified choices. But even without those caveats to the two policy achievements that conservatives cite most often, there are sound reasons to justify opposition from Never Trumpers."
