A majority of Americans think it was inappropriate for President Donald Trump to fire FBI Director James Comey, according to an NBC News online poll.
In the survey released Thursday, 38 percent called the firing appropriate, 54 percent said it wasn't.
On other related issues, the poll found 46 percent of Americans think Trump's decision had to do with the Russia investigation; 24 percent believe it's due to Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation; 2 percent said it was something else.
The survey also showed that 54 percent think allegations of Trump campaign contact with Russia are "serious issues," while 40 percent think its "more of a distraction."
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
In other findings:
- 55 percent say they're less confident in the Russia probe now that Comey is gone; 36 percent are more confident.
- 44 percent disapprove of how Comey handled his job as FBI director, 25 percent approve, and 28 percent say they don't know enough to have an opinion.
- 57 percent disapprove of how Comey handled Clinton's email investigation, 19 percent approve, and 20 percent say they don't know enough to have an opinion.
