Democrats are incorrect when they say Donald Trump's behavior is reflective of the conservative movement, according to writer Alexandra DeSanctis in
National Review.
A video at the Democratic National Convention showed clips of some of Trump's comments, including calling a woman a "disgusting pig" and saying, "You wouldn't have your job if you weren't beautiful."
DeSanctis writes that the DNC's claim — stated multiple times by different speakers — was that "Trump is living proof that Republicans, conservatives, and pro-lifers are perpetrating a war against women."
Trump's idea that women should be punished for having an abortion is "anathema" to the pro-life movement, writes DeSanctis, and Democrats linking Trump's comments to pro-life supporters harms constructive debate on the topic.
Sen. Harry Reid during his DNC speech "Republicans, you should have been more careful. Also, he [Trump] learned it from watching you."
Women also deserve equal rights, writes DeSanctis, and "no rational conservative disagrees with this statement." It's "dishonest" for Democrats to link the conservative movement to Trump, but they apparently find it "satisfying."
"Democrats have spent their convention tying their opponents to Trump, a man who does not represent the conservative movement. He makes for a great straw man, and it must be immensely satisfying to tear him apart."
Slate also noted the divide between conservatives and Trump, pointing out that some conservatives agreed with Hillary Clinton's comments about the GOP nominee.
