Former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, D-Ill., would like to serve as Joe Biden’s interior secretary.

“It’s just a natural fit for me,” said Moseley Braun.

Moseley Braun, the first Black woman to serve in the Senate when she was elected in 1992, made her remarks during an interview with The Washington Post. The paper noted she was an early supporter of Biden’s bid for the White House and campaigned for him over the past year.

Moseley Braun, who had been the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand at the end of Bill Clinton’s second term, has little experience in environmental policy, the Post noted.

But the newspaper said Moseley Braun and Biden are close. It pointed out that she had served with him on the Judiciary Committee when he was in the Senate.

And the Post reported that she had told him a week before the election she would like to serve in his administration.

“All I’ve done is let them know I’d like to be of service,” she said.

Moseley Braun noted that she has not pushed for a specific appointment, even though interior secretary would be her first choice.

“I’m not going to get into an elbow fight or knife fight with anybody over this stuff,” she said. “I know there’s intense competition.

The Post reported the two leading contenders for the job are New Mexico Democrats: Rep. Debra Haaland and retiring Sen. Tom Udall.

Republican strategist Karl Rove said Tuesday that Biden is surrounding himself with many of the same foreign policy advisers that led him to make bad decisions over the years when he was in the Senate and served as vice president to President Barack Obama.
