The nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court got a warm welcome Wednesday on the set of "Morning Joe," the MSNBC show often critical of the Trump administration.

"He's such a mainstream pick. It is hard to paint him as a wild-eyed ideologue," said co-host Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman. "It does make it more difficult for Democrats to paint him as a wild-eyed fanatic."

Guest panelist Willie Geist added: "The truth of the matter is that where there are places progressives will disagree on guns, abortion and presidential power. This is not a wild Judge Jeanine Pirro pick that some were fearing.

"This is an eminently qualified guy, and again you can disagree with his positions on certain issues, but this is a guy who is qualified for this job. This is a guy who's been supported by President [George W.] Bush, by Jeb Bush, by John McCain — really conventional Republicans, establishment Republicans."

Mike Barnicle said of Kavanaugh: "This man and his family are a tremendously appealing group of people."

And Michael Steele, former chair of the Republican National Committee, commented: "He's a former altar boy so I already identify with him. . . This future Supreme Court justice brings a lot to the table."
