A gay couple in a splinter group of the Central American migrant caravan became a social media sensation by getting married Saturday.
Erick Dubon, 23, and Pedro Nehemias, 22, are a part of a group of about 400 migrants – made up of dozens of LGBTQ+ people – who have advanced ahead of the main caravan by bus. Same-sex unions are banned in their nation of origin, Honduras. They have applied for asylum.
"We were discriminated against, even in the caravan," Erick told The Washington Post. "People wouldn't let us into trucks, they made us get in the back of the line for showers, they would call us ugly names."
The couple is among seven other reported LGBTQ couples in the splinter group, according to reports.
"I cannot believe we actually made it here to the border," a trans woman from El Salvador, Andy Albaringa, 23, told the Post. "The trip was so tiring."
President Donald Trump's administration is "hardening" the port of entry for the caravan in San Diego, according to border authorities.
