President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen claimed earlier this year that a member of Trump's current legal team told him to lie to Congress.
According to The Washington Post, Cohen told the House Intelligence Committee during a closed hearing that Jay Sekulow told Cohen to tell Congress that talks between the Trump Organization and Russian officials to build a Trump Tower Moscow were over in January 2016. Cohen later admitted that the discussions went until June of that year when Trump was the likely Republican presidential nominee.
"We're trying to find out whether anyone participated in the false testimony that Cohen gave to this committee," House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told the Post.
Cohen's attorneys Jane Serene Raskin and Patrick Strawbridge tried to brush off Cohen's claim in a statement sent to the Post. Cohen is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for tax evasion, campaign finance violations, and other charges.
"That this or any committee would rely on the word of Michael Cohen for any purpose — much less to try and pierce the attorney-client privilege and discover confidential communications of four respected lawyers — defies logic, well-established law and common sense," they said.
Cohen was also charged with lying to Congress when he told the aforementioned Senate panel that their Trump Tower Moscow talks ended in January 2016.
