It's a political horse race in Utah as a new poll shows Republican Rep. Mia Love has just a small edge over Democratic Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams in her bid for a third term.
The Salt Lake Tribune-Hinckley Institute of Politics survey reveals Love has a five-point edge over McAdams, which is even narrower than the lead she had three months ago.
And with the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points, it's a virtual dead heat in the race to represent the Beehive State's 4th Congressional district.
"This is going to be an exceptionally close race. And I think it's going to stay close to the very end." Jason Perry, director of the Hinckley Institute, told the Tribune.
A Brooklyn-born Haitian American, Love is the first black female Republican elected to Congress and the first black American elected to Congress from Utah. McAdams, a securities lawyer, is a former Utah state senator and has served as a volunteer adjunct faculty member at the University of Utah College of Law.
The Salt Lake Tribune notes that political handicappers "have already listed the race as a possible opportunity for Democrats to nab a seat typically considered safely Republican … at least partially owing to the unpopularity of President Donald Trump."
The nonpartisan Hinckley Institute, established in 1965 at the University of Utah, was founded to "engage students in governmental, civic, and political processes."
