Border adjustment tax cannot be part of the discussion for “real tax reform,” Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said Sunday in Colorado Springs while attending a three-day retreat hosted by the Koch network, the Washington Examiner reports.

"The two questions that have to be answered: when are we going to come to the realization the border adjustment tax cannot be part of real tax reform?" the House Freedom Caucus chairman told reporters.

"And the second part of that is, are we going to hold up real debate on tax reform while we make that decision?"

The event in Colorado Springs drew hundreds of the nation’s top conservative donors and was organized by the Seminar Network to help develop a strategy ahead of the 2018 election.

Meadows joined other Republicans in criticizing House GOP leaders pushing for the border-adjustment tax proposal, which would tax imports and make exports and other foreign sales tax-free.

Meadows said Republicans need to move quickly.

“It is my belief that we need to have the framework of what we're debating agreed to and in principle without legislative text by the end of July, to allow the whole month of August for those to work on legislative text, and CBO, et cetera, to try to work through some of those things so that we can really start debating it back and forth, both in the House and the Senate."
