A physician and former veteran who’s running for Georgia’s 7th congressional district seat on Friday came to the staunch defense of President Donald Trump’s closure of the nation’s borders amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview on Newsmax TV’s “The Chris Salcedo Show,” Dr. Richard McCormick, who served in the Marine Corps and Navy as a pilot and emergency medicine physician, pushed back at Trump critics who called the closure xenophobic.
“I've said for many years that we got to be careful who comes across” borders, he said. “We’ve got to the point where we have to become so politically correct even at the expense of our own people. It's not just drugs and child trafficking that come across borders. It’s disease processes.”
McCormick added that history tells us from the 1918 flu pandemic that killed 25 million “because we didn’t have containment.”
“I think it’s very responsible for the president to control borders and understand where the disease comes from,” he said.
