President Donald Trump would have a better chance facing a trial in China than he does before House Democrats, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday.
"You have a better chance of getting a fair justice system in China than you do in Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi's movement here inside the House," the California Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"They have a known liar, [House Intelligence Committee Chairman] Adam Schiff. He is the Americans' window into their attempt to remove this president."
McCarthy complained that House Democrats are holding closed-door sessions and are the only people who are allowed to call witnesses, but Trump does not get his own legal counsel in the room.
On Tuesday, just before the Democratic presidential debate opened, Pelosi told reporters she will not hold a formal vote for the ongoing impeachment inquiry. Both Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have said they will not cooperate with subpoenas for the inquiry until members of the House officially vote for it.
"You know in America, you're innocent until proven guilty until you let the Democrats become in charge," McCarthy said. "I sent the speaker a letter a week ago, and I laid out 10 simple questions. And you know where the questions came from? Exactly how Bill Clinton was treated and exactly how President Nixon was treated. Could we have a fair process?"
Trump, he added, did "nothing wrong," and there is no reason to impeach him.
"The Democrats know it," said McCarthy. "That's why they don't have it in an open committee."
House Republicans are calling for a resolution to censure Schiff for the "parody" reading he did concerning Trump's phone conversation in July with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
"The House should treat the impeachment process like they've treated every other process," said McCarthy.
