House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Sunday said Congress must be brought back in session in phases to help guide the country through its economic reopening — and to deal with China.
In an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” McCarthy said “Congress is essential.”
“We have worked through the Civil War, World War II and others,” he said. “We need to get to work and just as states wouldn't open up completely at once, we need committees to come back in, like Armed Services to do the national defense bill… Appropriations making sure government is funded… Oversight to look at the [World Health Organization] and its current administration acting not like… the Wuhan Health Organization.”
“We should actually get the facts and the answers and those committees could come back … to show that we are working for the American public just as we watch these states phase in and a safe, health it manner,” he urged.
According to McCarthy, Congress has already “proved” that it can get the job done even at limited numbers with the passage of the recent relief bill.
“We can open up in a manner and have committees working that can work in bigger buildings so they have social distancing,” he said. “They can do it in a safe manner while all the members aren't there and we can… work for the American public.”
