In early results, former U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Brian Mast rolled up 54 percent to win Florida's open 18th District (Palm Beach).
Earlier this year, "Sarge" Mast, who lost both legs during combat in Afghanistan, made national news by winning the GOP nomination over five opponents. Campaigning as a solid conservative, he vowed to scrap the Iran nuclear agreement and to support abolishing the U.S. Department of Education.
At a time when many Republicans abandoned Donald Trump and refused to endorse the nominee, Mast embraced his candidacy back in June. In his words, "if you have an infestation of rats and rodents in your home and you need to call the exterminator, you don't necessarily care about the personality of the exterminator. You just care that he gets rid of the infestation."
News of Mast's win over Democrat Randy Perkins came as Trump pulled ahead of Hillary Clinton with just a few votes left to be counted in the battle for Florida's electoral votes.
