Republican Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker is in favor of the federal government imposing a ban on assault weapons.

His comments were reported by MassLive.

Baker said he supports a ban similar to the one adopted in Massachusetts.

"Look, I think the assault weapons ban in the commonwealth of Massachusetts, based on all the data that's available, has served this commonwealth well, and I think it would be appropriate at this point for the federal government to adopt something similar," Baker said.

His s remarks followed the shooting deaths of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February. The gunman used an AR-15 rifle during the shooting spree.

MassLive reported Baker's view on the ban in Massachusetts have shifted over the years. During a 2013 television appearance, Baker appeared skeptical of the ban, the website said.
