Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., and Democratic challenger Mark Kelly are essentially tied in a new state poll, according to Emerson College Polling ahead of the 2020 elections.
Kelly has the support of 46% of registered voters, compared to McSally, who has 45% in one of the nation's tightest races.
Republicans hold a 53-47 edge in the chamber now, but 23 GOP seats are up for grabs next year compared with just 12 Democratic seats.
McSally was appointed to her seat last year and enters the fourth quarter at a cash deficit in a difficult race against Kelly, a famous astronaut who is married to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.
Kelly has outraised McSally in every fundraising cycle this year, bringing in $5.3 million during the period. Kelly had more than $9.5 million on hand, easily topping McSally's resources at the end of September.
The poll also found:
- 31% of Arizonans support a public healthcare option, compared with 28% who want to keep things as they are.
- 23% support Medicare for All and 19% are unsure.
- The economy is the most important issue at 33%, followed by healthcare (18%), immigration (13%) and social issues (11%).
- 50% of voters in Arizona oppose impeaching President Donald Trump, while 44% support impeachment.
The poll was conducted Oct. 25-28, among 901 registered voters and has a plus or minus 3.2 percentage point margin of error.
