The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Sunday that “common-sense” election security measures would get a supermajority on the Senate floor if a vote was allowed.
In an interview on CBC News’ “Face The Nation,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., urged election security measures ahead of the 2020 vote.
“I think there is some common sense things that would gets 75 votes if they could get to the floor of the Senate,” he said.
“The Kremlin or foreign government tries to intervene, the obligation ought to be not to say ‘thank you’ as the president floated a month or so ago, but tell the FBI,” Warren said.
He also said that the United States should “make sure that every polling station in America has a paper ballot back up in case that machine was hacked.”
He also said Congress should “make sure we have rules of the road for Facebook, Twitter, Google, social media so there's not the ability to have foreign agents and bots manipulate.”
However, he said, “this administration has stopped every election security legislation coming to the floor and they’ve been supported in that effort by the Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell [R-Ky.].”
“I just don’t get why this president wouldn’t be willing to say ‘let’s make sure that our elections are secure in 2020,’” he added.
