A new poll found Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would beat President Donald Trump in a hypothetical matchup in Texas in 2020.
A Public Policy Polling survey whose results were shared with Business Insider gives Cuban, should he run as a Democrat, a 47 percent to 44 percent advantage.
Texas has voted for the Republican presidential candidate in every election since 1980. In 1976, Democrat Jimmy Carter won and received the state's 26 Electoral College votes (Texas now has 38 Electoral College votes).
Cuban is a vocal Trump critic and he voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in last year's election. He has dropped hints about a potential White House run in 2020, but he would likely choose to do that as a Republican.
In October, Cuban said he is qualified to run the country should he decide to enter the race.
"I think we're going into a time where you need somebody who can connect to people and relate to people, and I think I qualify on each of those," Cuban said. "Now, whether or not I'll do it . . . it's a big decision."
