Rubio: Need 'Plan B' if we Can't Pass Trump's Immigration Package

("CBS This Morning")

Congress needs a "plan B" if it can't pass President Donald Trump's immigration reform package that includes a path to citizenship for immigrants brought here as children, tighter border security, and limits on so-called chain migration, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla, told "CBS This Morning" Wednesday.

Rubio told the program he thinks some changes on issues like "chain migration" and the visa lottery could muster enough Democratic support to pass the Senate.

But, he said, "if somehow, we just can't get those things done, we should have a 'plan B' that basically focuses on border security and focuses on making sure that the people here under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) now do not lose their status . . . give them something permanent."

Trump has called for new limits on family migration, so immigrants here cannot bring in a slew of "distant relatives."

Rubio noted that immigrants can bring in parents or siblings, but not aunts or uncles and the like. He said the changes Trump wants are similar to what "almost every other country in the world now has."

Trump's plan also would give childhood arrivals, or Dreamers, a path to citizenship within 10 or 12 years, in exchange for tightened border security, including a wall on the Mexican border — issues sure to draw some resistance in Congress.

Many Democrats want a clean DACA bill, and some conservatives say the pathway to citizenship amounts to "amnesty."

A plan B would mean that the Dreamers would be protected and that we could "fight another day or keep working, on the path to citizenship part."

Responding to a question about immigrants and the terror gang known as MS-13, Rubio noted that just a tiny fraction of all immigrants are gang members. And, he said, the gang targets fellow immigrants.

"MS-13 does not go into Beverly Hills," he said, noting that the gang preys on immigrants in their own communities.
