Sen. Graham: Harris Luring Trump Into 'Insult Debates'

By    |   Sunday, 01 September 2024 01:37 PM EDT

Democrat nominee Kamala Harris' campaign is trying to draw former President Donald Trump into "insult debates" and away from the issues, and he must not fall for that, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday.

"Focus on the issues, Mr. President," the South Carolina Republican told ABC News' "This Week." "Every poll says the same thing. The American people trust you with what matters the most to them, the economy, inflation, border security, and just managing the government. If I were you, my friend, I would focus on those issues laser-like, and you will win this race."

Trump, looking ahead to the Sept. 10 debate, has called Harris a person who is "dumb" and says she "can't put two sentences together," but Graham pointed out that she "obviously" has "some talent," as she's been a senator, attorney general, and vice president.

Instead, the focus should turn to Harris' record on foreign policy, where "she's been a wrecking ball," said Graham.

"On Israel, she sat there and listened to somebody call the Israeli government and people engaging in genocide and did nothing about it," he said. "She boycotted [Benjamin Netanyahu's] speech to the Congress, sending a signal to Hamas and Iran that America really doesn't have Israel's back. She was cheerleading the withdrawal from Afghanistan. She's bragged about being the last person in the room, the dumbest decision maybe in modern history by American administration."

Graham added that he was in Munich when Harris warned the Russians not to invade Ukraine, but "four days later they did."

Harris' record on the border is also troubled, as "we've got more terrorists in our country than any time in history, and fentanyl poisoning is the leading cause of death among young people in America. That's what I would hit her with," said Graham.

Meanwhile, Trump last week promised that if elected, there would be a mandate for funding IVF treatments, and Graham said he thinks the former president is "just trying to show his support," even though Congress had a vote on the issue and every Republican in the Senate voted against it except for two.

"We have been accused of being against IVF treatments. We're not," Graham said. "Maybe we should have a means-tested tax credit for people using IVF and other treatments to become pregnant."

Graham also discussed the ongoing controversy concerning Trump's actions at the Arlington National Cemetery last week.

"You know what really is unfortunate? That these families had to go visit their fallen loved ones at Arlington due to incompetence by the Biden administration," said Graham. "Vice President Harris bragged about being the last person in the room, cheerleading the withdrawal of all forces that led to the death of these 13 … another 9/11 is coming our way."
