Sen. Lindsey Graham on Sunday said there ought to be a special counsel to investigate Democratic funding of a pre-election dossier on President Donald Trump — and of Russian donations to the Clinton Global Fund.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” the South Carolina Republican rebuked Trump’s call for the Justice Department to investigate former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
“That's just not the way we do it in America,” he said. “Here's what I do… believe needs to happen. I think we need a special counsel to investigate the Fusion GPS episode between the Democratic Party, [British spy Christopher] Steele and Russian operatives.”
“Everything about Fusion GPS stinks,” he added. “The idea that the Democratic Party would hire, through a law firm, a foreign intelligence officer, go to Russia and try to gather dirt means that they've set themselves up to be manipulated by the Russians.”
“The idea that the Russians didn't know that Mr. Steele was in town looking for dirt on Donald Trump is zero impossible,” he continued. “I can't believe that they didn't know. So you're setting yourself up to be manipulated by the Russians. And, to me, that's a terrible thing to do.”
He also called for a special counsel to investigate the Uranium One episode, “where thousands of dollars were given to the Clinton Global Fund and to former President Bill Clinton from groups tied to Russia. We need a special counsel because Mueller can't do this.”
