Retiring Sen. Bob Corker lashed out at President Donald Trump for his attacks on the Justice Department for not probing Hillary Clinton regarding allegations of an unethical funding arrangement with the Democratic National Committee during last year's election.

"Like me, most Americans hope that our justice system is independent and free of political interference," the Tennessee Republican said in a statement.

"President Trump's pressuring of the Justice Department and FBI to pursue cases against his adversaries and calling for punishment before trials take place are totally inappropriate and not only undermine our justice system but erode the American people's confidence in our institutions," Corker said.

Trump earlier Friday slammed the Justice Department and FBI for not investigating Clinton after former interim DNC Chair Donna Brazile wrote that she believed that the Clinton campaign gained control over the party under the financing arrangement.

The president unleashed his attacks on Twitter:

With "Pocahontas," Trump was derogatorily referencing Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who said Thursday that she agreed with the president that the Democratic nomination was "rigged" to favor Clinton.

The president declined to rule out firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions if he did not act on Clinton, responding to a reporter's question on the matter by saying, "I don't know."

"I'm really not involved with the Justice Department," Trump said as he left the White House to begin his 12-day trip to Asia. "I'd like to let it run itself.

"But, honestly, they should be looking at the Democrats," he continued. "They should be looking at [Clinton campaign chair John] Podesta and all of that dishonesty.

"They should be looking at a lot of things and a lot of people are disappointed in the Justice Department, including me."

Corker's statement Friday marked the third time in recent weeks that he has attacked President Trump.

He announced in September that he would not seek a third term next year.
