Goucher Poll: Hogan Holds Slim Leads on Dems in Md.

By    |   Tuesday, 02 April 2024 01:25 PM EDT

Former Maryland GOP Gov. Larry Hogan holds narrow leads in hypothetical matchups with Democrats Angela Alsobrooks and Rep. David Trone in the state's Senate race, according to a new Goucher College poll.

Here are how the results, released Tuesday, break down:

  • 44% of likely voters in Maryland say they favor Hogan in a race against Alsobrooks, Prince George's County executive, who was backed by 40%.
  • 11% say they are undecided.
  • 43% say they back Hogan in a race against Trone, who is favored by 42%. That is within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
  • 10% say they are undecided.

"Should former Gov. Larry Hogan win the Republican primary, our results indicate that the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin would be closely contested against either Democratic candidates — U.S. Rep. David Trone or Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks," said Dr. Mileah Kromer, director of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics at Goucher College. "Abortion, gun control, and health care, as well as Democratic control of the U.S. Senate, all matter for Democrats, but public safety, economic development, and tax issues rise to the top as the key issues for voters overall."

The poll, done in partnership with The Baltimore Banner, was conducted March 19-24. It surveyed 800 registered Maryland voters.
