Former national security adviser Michael Flynn was being set up to fall well before the phone call that led to an FBI investigation and his conviction, former Deputy National Security Adviser KT McFarland told Newsmax TV.
"The rationale ... all along for going after General Flynn for the Mueller investigation, for this whole genesis of Russian collusion, was that General Flynn talked to the Russian ambassador on a phone call, on December 29th," McFarland told Wednesday's "The Chris Salcedo Show."
McFarland continued: "That was the bad act that all of the democrats, and the intelligence community and their lackeys in the media all pointed to as the original sin. Well it turns out they were targeting Flynn, and wiretapping Flynn and unmasking Flynn long before this. So I think this is further proof that this was a set up from the very beginning."
McFarland said the Justice Department came after Flynn because he had plans to restructure the FBI, CIA and other intelligence agencies.
"I think they went after General Flynn because they were afraid he was going to come after them. President Trump, and General Flynn and I, we all discussed the need for reorganization in the intelligence community before Trump took office, and I think this was a preemptive strike on their part."
