Freedom Partners ripped the Trump administration over the announcement of steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, Mexico and Canada, The Hill is reporting.

The group, which is backed by billionaire brothers, Charles and David Koch, argued the decision to impose the tariffs will eventually come back to hurt American families.

"The tax cuts and reduction in regulatory barriers enacted by the Trump administration has helped economic growth and job creation. Wages have increased and unemployment rates are the lowest in decades," Freedom Partners spokesman James Davis said.

"All this success will be greatly undermined by the imposition of new taxes on working Americans. Trade barriers make Americans as a whole poorer and they especially harm those already disadvantaged. Trade wars hurt everyone.

"They trigger retaliatory tariffs from our trade partners. That raises prices on American families who need affordable access to household goods. We urge the Trump administration to abandon these tariffs."

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Thursday there will be a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum.

President Donald Trump originally announced the tariffs in March, but the U.S. had granted temporary exemptions at the time to the E.U., Canada, and Mexico.

Ross said Thursday the administration decided to end those temporary exemptions, according to The Hill.
