GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger Wednesday slammed the Trump campaign's continued fundraising efforts that have brought in millions of dollars to fund the fight to prove election fraud as a "scam."
"Where I feel really bad, though, is just the people that are struggling during the pandemic that are giving President (Donald) Trump's campaign money for this recount because they believe him," the Illinois Republican said on CNN's "New Day." "It's just a scam. It's a big grift."
More than $200 million has been raised by the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee, two joint fundraising committees, and the president’s leadership committee, Save America since Election Day, reports CNBC, quoting the Federal Election Commission.
"People will say 'Adam, you know, was supportive of the president in the past,'" the congressman said. "Hard-working taxpayers are giving their money to this because they are convinced, because the president is telling them that they can win, and they can't."
The Republican lawmaker also called his fellow party members in Congress to task for saying they'll oppose the Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden and accused Trump of practicing "one-way" loyalty after the president slammed Republicans as being "weak" for not passing his call to raise COVID stimulus payments to $2,000 per person.
The lawmaker said he did vote in the House for the $2,000 checks, as even with the country bring trillions of dollars in debt, the country must make sacrifices.
"It's a time where we are in such a bad position that if you are going to spend money and put it in people's pockets so they can spend money, it needs to be now," said Kinzinger. "I don't know if Mitch McConnell is just slow-walking it or whatever, but keep in mind, I mean, the president has just gone after Mitch McConnell now."
