Conway: Trump Didn't Think Voter Fraud, Wiretapping Claims Were Lies

By    |   Sunday, 23 July 2017 06:22 PM EDT

President Donald Trump didn't think he was lying when he made ill-informed statements on wiretapping and voter fraud, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told CNN's Brian Stelter Sunday afternoon.

Stelter and Conway were discussing the White House attacks against the media when Stelter mentioned "big scandals" happening, including Trump's claims that former President Barack Obama had wiretapped him during the election and that millions illegally cast votes costing him the popular vote.

"The scandals are about the president's lies," Stelter said. "About voter fraud, about wire-tapping, his repeated lies about those issues. That's the scandal."

Both of Trump's claims were unverified.

"He doesn't think he's lying about those issues, and you know it. He has gone forth and he talked about surveillance," Conway said.

"A lot of husbands don't think they're lying when they cheat on their spouse and then say they're not. It doesn't mean they're not lying," Stelter retorted.

The wide-ranging interview on "Reliable Sources," which lasted 22 minutes, also focused on Trump's hiring on Friday of White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci.
