Republican strategist Karl Rove on Friday praised the latest quarterly economic numbers, but said that President Donald Trump needed to "herald" them and other accomplishments to help the GOP keep Congress in November.
"What happens when the economy gets good is people's concerns are no longer the economy as much as other things," Rove, who served in the George W. Bush administration, told Bill Hemmer on Fox News.
"The president does need to go out there and herald this.
"He needs to explain it is the result of regulatory changes and tax reform — and that's put money back in people's pockets."
The Commerce Department said Friday that the nation's economy surged in the April-June quarter to an annual growth rate of 4.1 percent, the fastest pace since 2014, because consumers were spending their tax cuts and exporters rushed to get their products delivered before tariffs took effect.
The gross domestic product, the nation’s total output of goods and services, posted its best showing since a 4.9 percent gain in the third quarter of 2014, the department said.
Trump hailed the "amazing" rate and said it was proof that "we've accomplished an economic turnaround of historic proportion."
Rove noted how Trump's policies were fueling the quarterly growth.
"Businesses, because of tax reform, are investing in plants and equipment, consumers are spending money.
"April, May and June have good retail numbers — and we also have companies that are producing for the foreign market," he told Hemmer.
But Trump has to tout his full economic agenda in swaying voters to keep Republicans in power in November.
"He has to be able to say not only is the economy good because of what I've done, but here are the additional things I want to do to keep things going in the right direction and make things better," Rove said.
"They have be concrete, believable, consistent and laid out over the next 101 days between now and the election, so people get a sense that he is not sitting on his laurels."
