Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is a better choice for vice president than Newt Gingrich, says GOP strategist Karl Rove, because he has more of the overall package presumptive nominee Donald Trump is looking for.
And he's different.
"Vice presidents tend to be better when they're new and different," Rove said Monday on Fox News Channel's
"The O'Reilly Factor."
Trump has said in the past he wanted someone with congressional experience to get his agenda through, then "vibrated between an insider who knows Washington and an outsider," Rove said.
Trump has also looked at governors and "vibrated between an elected official, a military officer and a business person."
Pence is an elected official, but still a Washington outsider and has been a successful businessman, Rove noted. Plus, the two have good chemistry.
While Gingrich has lots of good qualities and has been in public life a long time, just like Pence, he's more known.
Pence will be different, Rove said, just like in 1992, when Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton picked Tennessee Sen. Al Gore for his running mate. At the time, no presidential candidate had ever picked a running mate from his neighboring state — and it worked.
