Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro declared Thursday that "I don't want to make our country anything again," promising to work to make the United States more inclusive if he is elected next year.
"I don't want to go backward; I want to go forward to create an America that is better than ever," Castro, who served as Housing and Urban Development secretary under President Barack Obama, told the Presidential Town Hall sponsored by Newsmax and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Castro said that his agenda is to "harness the potential of immigrants in our country.
"No more separating families, no more kids in cages, no more playing games with people seeking asylum, no treating people cruelly.
"We're going to deal with people on a common level," he said. "That's a good way that's the kind of America that I want."
