Rep. Joseph Kennedy III, D-Mass., blasted President Donald Trump for claiming to have misspoken during a press conference with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
Kennedy’s comments came in Wednesday in an interview on CNN’s "New Day."
"Every politician misspeaks, every person misspeaks, that’s fine," Kennedy said.
"Would vs. wouldn’t is a pretty big deal."
Kennedy says based on the tone of the news conference, there is no doubt what Trump was thinking.
A video excerpt of Kennedy’s remarks was posted on a CNN Twitter account.
Trump has said he meant to say at the press conference with Putin that he saw no reason why Russia wouldn’t have interfered in the 2016 U.S. election.
"In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word 'would' instead of 'wouldn't,'" the president said. "The sentence should have been: 'I don't see any reason why I wouldn't or why it wouldn't be Russia.'"
But Kennedy said the president has lost credibility on the issue.
"This is a horrible thing to say," Kennedy noted. "The president of the United States has no credibility when it comes to this issue, in front of many members of Congress, both Democrat and Republican, and the American public."
During the interview, Kennedy also said Trump’s translator at the summit with Putin should be subpoenaed if the White House does not provide details of the meeting with the Russian leader.
"It's up to Congress to try and assert our role and make sure we know exactly what the president agreed to," Kennedy said.
