Jim Jordan: Republicans Would ‘Unite Strongly’ Behind Romney

By    |   Friday, 30 March 2012 04:06 PM EDT

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, says he and other Republicans will “unite strongly” around Mitt Romney if he emerges as the GOP presidential nominee.

To be sure, Jordan himself isn’t willing to endorse the former Massachusetts governor yet, The Hill reports. Jordan said he’d be happy with Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich as a nominee too.

“Right now it looks like it’s going to be Mitt Romney,” Jordan said in an interview taped on C-SPAN Thursday for broadcast Sunday. “He has paid his dues, he has fought the good fight, and if he emerges as the winner, I’m going to be behind him 100 percent to help him beat Barack Obama this fall.”

Jordan scoffed at speculation that the hard fought GOP presidential primary campaign will hurt the party in its effort to unseat President Barack Obama in November. Regardless of who the GOP nominee is, conservatives will have fire in their belly to dump Obama, he said.

“Two words: Barack Obama,” Jordan said. “If Mitt Romney’s the guy, that’s what gets us excited. We do not want a second term for the guy who’s in the White House now.”
