Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., said that discussion about impeaching President Donald Trump is "not appropriate."
"I just think it's silly talk… I mean, I think it's not appropriate, at all. I don't think the investigation that's been done on Russia — the information isn't back yet. And, it's way way way way premature," Tester said on HBO's "Vice News Tonight."
The special counsel's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election has not concluded, Tester said and "once you get the facts then understand what those facts are really saying and then hold people accountable. And I don't think… what he did is going to be an impeachable offense, if he did anything."
The senator is running for reelection in Montana, a state Trump won by more than 20 percentage points in the 2016, and he is one of 10 Democratic senators who are defending their seat.
Trump took aim at Tester when the senator publicly discussed allegations against Ronny Jackson, whom Trump had selected to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. Jackson later withdrew his nomination.
The president in April called on Tester to resign.
"When he came after me on Ronny Jackson, he was straight up about it… he attacked me to my face. I'm OK with that," Tester told "Vice News Tonight."
On Thursday, Tester provided a tongue-in-cheek welcome to Trump in Montana, where the president is set to campaign for Tester's opponent, state auditor Matt Rosendale.
Tester took out a full-page ad in 16 newspapers thanking him for supporting his legislation.
