Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Sunday he disagreed with President Donald Trump’s assertion that four Democratic minority congresswomen are incapable of loving America — and urged the nation to get past the “racial framework” and move toward a “color blind society.”
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Johnson was pressed on his position on Trump’s latest tweet targeting Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.
“That’s his opinion. I don’t agree with it,” he said.
“I would say in general the whole love it or leave sentiment is … unfortunate. .. I would like to see everyone reduce this rhetoric,” he added.”We all want a safe prosperous America.
“I just find it very unfortunate that so many parts of our public debate are getting stuck inside a racial framework... what I would like to see is us moving toward that color blind society,” Johnson said of the furor that has swirled around the fight between Trump and the “squad” of lawmakers.
In the interview, Johnson also asserted “economic migrants” are not making a proper asylum claim, and urged a fix to the “broken” system.
“What do you do so people don't feel they want to move to America - economic migrants, which is not an asylum claim,” he said. “We have to start to reduce the flow of people coming in the country exploiting our broken asylum system."
