Sen. John Fetterman on Sunday called the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump a "dark, dark day for our nation."
The Pennsylvania Democrat told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" that the violence that took place at the Butler, Pennsylvania rally, should not be politicized.
"I just would like to remind you that, for me, this isn't about an opportunity for politics or strategy, or how this might play out are the visuals or anything like that," Fetterman said. "This was an incredibly dark day for Pennsylvania, but for our nation, as well."
Fetterman was the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, which is located about an hour away from Butler, before he was elected to the Senate. He said that he was in Pennsylvania on Saturday to attend the vigil of a transgender teen who had been murdered.
He commented on CNN that it was a "very sad night" for him, personally.
Several statements have been made attempting to connect Saturday's shooting to Trump's political opposition, but Fetterman called on the nation to "turn down the temperature on this."
"This election is going to be the biggest election in our lifetime, and we have months ahead of us," he said. "So much more can happen."
Trump suffered a wound to his ear and has been reported to be "fine" after the attempted assassination. One rallygoer was killed and others were injured when the shots were fired.
